Early Years Foundation Degree
This programme is offered in partnership with the University of Greenwich. The sector-endorsed Foundation Degree in Early Years has received DfES and Sure Start recognition and will open the doors to a wide range of future career opportunities in early years. Covering current theoretical perspectives on early years education and care, the course has been specifically designed for students who are currently working in or those who have aspirations to work in an early years setting at senior practitioner level. The qualification can, after a brief bridging programme, allow entry to the final year of several University of Greenwich degrees, including those in Education Studies, Childhood Studies, Education and Training, Youth and Community Studies, or to a relevant combined honours degree.

Course Content:
The programme has a solid core based on child development and early years practice. The programme comprises 14 courses, 12 of which are worth 15 credits. The remaining two courses Professional Practice Portfolios 1 and 2 for students enrolled on the taught programme are each worth 30 credits. Successful completion of the full programme therefore leads to 240 credits. Core courses include:

  • Level 2:
    Students can specialise at this level and can choose from optional courses related to the curriculum at Foundation Stage and Key Stage 1.

    Vocational Relevance:
    This qualification is highly relevant to workforce reform within the early years sector and the governments strategy to find a route for 40% of the early years workforce to be trained to degree level.

    Accreditation of Prior Learning / Experience:
    This is available and will be considered on an individual basis at interview.

    Entry Process:
    All applicants will be invited to a personal interview.

    Assessment:
    Students will be assessed on the basis of written assignments, reports, projects, timed assessments and reflective evaluations. All assessment methods will be closely linked to working practice.

    Progression Routes:
    The qualification can, after a brief bridging programme, allow entry to the final year of several University of Greenwich degrees. It also provides a path to Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) via the Registered Teachers Programme (RTP).

    Career Options:
    Students successfully completing this course will improve their prospects of career progression, with roles such as a senior early years practitioner, centre manager and early years teacher possible.
