Attendance
You are expected to be available to attend college Monday to Thursday 9am to 5.30pm and Friday 9am to 4.30pm. You will be required to carry out a large amount of independent study outside these times

Course Description
This course will provide you with a good insight into many aspects of the travel and tourism industry and will provide you with transferable knowledge such as business and customer service

Course Structure
The national award consists of 6 units of study of which 4 are compulsory:
  • Customer Service
  • UK Travel Destinations
  • Business of Travel and Tourism
  • Long Haul Destinations


Optional units specialise in particular aspects of the industry such as Holiday reps, Entertainment, Conference and Exhibitions, Visitor Attractions, Tour Operators, Cruising etc

You will also study Key Skills which include Maths and English.

Progression onto the National Certificate and Diploma will be through completing the National Award, and will see you completing a further 6 units of study for the National Certificate or a further 12 units for the Diploma.

Study units vary from Handling Air Passengers Events, Conferences and Exhibitions to Investigating the Cruise Sector and Working with children in Holiday Play Settings

Course Assessment
Assessment will take a variety of forms including written assignments, organisation of activities, presentations and tests. Some assessment will be undertaken outside of college hours

Course Costs
There are no course fees if you are under 19 years old on 31 August 2010. However, you may have to pay for textbooks, personal kits, uniforms, trips and personal stationery. You will be informed of these at your interview.

You will need to purchase a uniform and a travel atlas. Some educational visits will be compulsory as part of this course and these will be payable in instalments. Full details will be provided at interview

Course Enrichment
Activities such as trips and visits will be arranged, which are beneficial to this course and your learning. These activities are optional and additional fees will be charged to you. Details will be provided at the time of interview.

You will be able to study a number of additional courses if you wish. These may include cabin crew, passenger service agents and resort reps qualifications. You may also be able to learn a language such as Italian or Spanish.

Course Progression
If you complete the National Certificate or Diploma you may be able to gain entry to University or Higher Level study

Course Career Prospects
Learners will improve their chances of gaining employment in the travel and tourism industry such as travel agencies, tour operators, visitor attractions, overseas work such as resort representatives whilst improving their own communication and vocational skills.
