EMTA Award (EAL) National Vocational Qualification in Performing Engineering Operations Level 1Duration
One year full time

Attendance
The course requires approximately 16 hours contact time per week which will be timetabled between Monday to Thursday 9am to 6.20pm and Friday 9am to 4.30pm.

Course Description
This award is aimed at people new to the Engineering Industry who require qualifications in Electrical, Mechanical or Fabrication/Welding specialism.

The qualification recognises what a competent person is able to do at work. The course involves learning and developing the skills and knowledge needed to work in an engineering workshop environment. This course has a high practical content.

Course Structure
The course requires the completion of three mandatory and two optional assessment routes.

Mandatory Units:
  • Working safely in an engineering environment
  • Working efficiently and effectively in engineering
  • Using and communicating technical information
  • Optional Units


Mechanical
  • Making components using hand tools and fitting techniques
  • Using lathes for turning operations


Fab/Weld
  • Using manual MIG or MAG welding equipment
  • Using manual metal arc welding equipment


Electrical
  • Assembling and wiring electrical panels
  • Assembling electronic circuits


Course Assessment
The course is internally assessed through observation/practical/written assessment techniques.

  • 2 GCSEs grades G and above in Maths and English

  • Entry requirements may be waived for mature students who have relevant experience.


Course Costs
There are no course fees if you are under 19 years old on 31 August 2010. However, you may have to pay for textbooks, personal kits, uniforms, trips and personal stationery. You will be informed of these at your interview.

A £50 charge for course materials is applied to all full time engineering courses.

Course Enrichment
As part of the assessment every student must pass, or have passed each of the key skills at level 1 which are assessed on the course.

Course Progression
Successful students can progress on to level 2 PEO and/or First Diploma in Engineering.

Course Career Prospects

  • This programme is aimed at people wanting to enter the industry in roles such as operator however after further study there are wider job opportunities including craftsperson, technician, Technical engineering and project leader.
