English Language and Literature will appeal to students who enjoy thinking about the way that language is used in the world around them. How do writers and speakers inform, persuade and affect our emotions through the choices they make?
You will look at literature - 2 novels and a play - as well as language to think about how writers and speakers can influence their audiences. This course covers a wide range of both reading and writing.
What will I study?
Throughout the course you will develop your skills in reading a wide range of texts, from novels and plays, to looking at the language used in everyday and political speeches.
You will look at how writers and speakers use language to create a range of effects on their audience to inform, persuade and affect our thoughts and feelings. You will also develop your own writing skills and develop techniques that will make your writing more effective.
AS: In the first year there are two Units.
In Unit 1 you will study two set novels, looking at issues of theme, attitude and style. You will also produce a piece of creative writing in response to the novels you have studied.
In Unit 2 you will study another novel and the way that speech is used in everyday life and in planned situations (such as a political speech).
A2: In the second year there are two more Units.
In Unit 3 you will study a range of unseen texts and develop your own writing skills through non-fiction writing.
In Unit 4 you will compare two set texts to explore in detail the relationship between them. This is a coursework unit and you will decide which areas to focus on.
How will I be assessed?
AS: 2 written exams at the end of year 1.
A2: 2 written exams at the end of year 2.
What can I do next?
English Language and Literature can be used for a number of areas of further study at University level and is helpful for entry into courses in teaching, the media, journalism and advertising .
