English Language AS/A2
This course will appeal to you if you are interested in language and communication, and how it is used in different contexts. You will have the opportunity to develop your own writing for different purposes and audiences, analyse texts and investigate topics such as the way men and women communicate differently, and how children's language develops.

What will I study?
Throughout the course you will learn about how language works on many different levels. You will study examples of spoken and written language, look at the ways in which language is used for different purposes and how language reflects social issues such as gender, powerand technology.

AS: The first year of the course introduces key concepts in the study of language, and develops your skill in analysing texts. You will also produce a range of original writing, as well as analysing your own work.

A2: In the second year you will look more closely at language theory, with a focus on the wayw children acquire language and how language has changed over time. You will also apply your knowledge of linguistic methods to investigate an area of language that interests you.

How will I be assessed?
AS: 1 written examination at the end of year one (60%), plus a coursework folder of your own original writing (40%).

A2: 1 written examination at the end of year two (60%), plus a coursework investigation into a language of your choice (40%).

What can I do next?
The study of English Language will develop your confidence in writing and analysis and is, therefore, a valued subject for both University-level study and employment. Some students choose to specialise in areas such as Language, Linguistics, Phonetics and Speech and Language Therapy at University; others go on to further study and work in areas such as teaching, journalism, law, marketing, librarianship, management and many more.
