About this course

You will need GCSE passes (C or above) in English and English Literature. An interest in reading is essential for students pursuing this course. Good essay skills are desirable and they will be developed further as the course unfolds. An ability to work both on your own and with others and to take responsibility for your own learning are important qualities.

Course Content
This course is a natural 'step up' from GCSE English and builds on the reading, writing and analytical skills you will have developed in school.
You will study novels, short stories, plays and poetry [e.g. Jane Austen, Ted Hughes, the Bronte sisters and other English and American authors] as the course unfolds. You will also incorporate your own creative writing into your coursework.
In addition to studying the books themselves, you can expect to watch and discuss DVD versions of the texts. English students will also be offered the opportunity to go on trips [e.g. to the Globe Theatre in London, where students can find out about the life and culture of William Shakespeare.]
Teaching/Assessment
There will be a range of classroom activities centred mainly on discussions of Literature. Student participation in classroom activity is central to the course and students will sometimes work independently, in pairs or in small groups. Video and DVD will feature prominently throughout the course.
Independently study - students will also be expected to research topics in the College Library or using the Internet. There will be opportunities to visit local and regional productions of plays that are being studied.
The course is assessed with a combination of coursework and examanations.
Progression
Students can progress to higher education courses in English Language and Literature and other arts subjects.
An A Level in English Literature is useful for such careers as teaching, journalism, marketing, advertising, public relations, creative writing, administration and the civil service.
In fact, successful completion of this course helps prepare the individual for any career that requires a good standard of English and the ability to think in a focused and organized way.
