About this course

Students will need a C Grade or higher in GCSE English Language and you need to enjoy reading and writing.

The ability to express yourself clearly in writing would be an advantage but more importantly you need enthusiasm for the subject. You will be gathering information for project work.

At other times you may be asked to work independently or in groups.

English Literature and Language Combined A Level (Level 3)
Course Content
Both English language and literature are studied in approximately equal amounts and assessed by coursework and examinations.
In addition to stories, plays and poems you can also expect to study the language of journalism, advertising, travel writing, autobiography, speeches, radio and TV.
You will also explore spoken English and develop an awareness of the structure of language.
In coursework, you will have the chance to produce pieces of your own original writing. Use will be made of DVD and IT and there will be opportunities to go on trips.
A broad and relevant subject, AS Level English Language and Literature offers a natural progression from GCSE English.
This course is equivalent to 40-120 UCAS points.
Teaching/Assessment
The course work element and end of year exams offer a balanced form of assessment.
Previous students have expressed great enthusiasm for this approach as it means that they are not assessed solely by examination at the end of the year.
The course is assessed by a combination of coursework and exams.
Progression
The course is well regarded by Higher Education establishments. It offers excellent preparation for careers in journalism and the media, teaching, publishing and arts administration as well as many other related areas of study and work.
