About this course
A Grade C or above in GCSE English is important if you want to study English Literature at this level. You should enjoy reading and discussing different kinds of literature.

English Literature AS/A2
This is an exciting course that enables you to read, discuss, analyse and write about a wide range of literature. You will develop your critical skills and learn how to present your ideas effectively.
What will I study?
AS: You will look at different approaches to analysing literature through reading and discussing a range of modern texts based on the struggle for individual identity. You will explore a variety of novels, poetry and drama and produce a piece of coursework based on two texts.
A2: You will look at a variety of texts within the theme of 'love through the ages'. In the exam you will answer on a range of unseen texts. You will also complete a folder of coursework based on the comparison of two texts of your own choice and an analysis of one Shakespeare play. This is an exciting opportunity to look into the texts you enjoy.
How will I be assessed?
One written examination and one folder of coursework in each year.
What can I do next?
The critical, analytical and communication skills developed during the course make English Literature an excellent preparation for Higher Education in any area. If you want to specialise, there are a wide range of courses in English, Journalism, Media and Cultural Studies.
