General overview
This programme will appeal to students who have an interest in making a living out of Applied Arts. You will experience textiles, jewellery and ceramics, learn how to design and make products that are fit for purpose and develop the business expertise and knowledge required to run a small business.

Links with industry through work experience, live briefs, exhibition opportunities and competitions will give you the chance to work with a variety of clients.

In Level One you will learn to use a wide range of materials and processes in the three disciplines. Professional practice will teach you about life as a designer maker and give you market awareness and consumer knowledge. Visual and Contextual studies will develop your visual identity and contextual understanding of design.

At Level Two the module Integrated Techniques and Negotiated Project will combine design skills across the three disciplines. You will be encouraged to negotiate your own project as part of the Work Based Learning module allowing you to develop and determine your own niche market. Applied Arts in Context will expand your contemporary understanding of material culture.

Studio time with skilled practicing artists in professionally equipped workshops will nurture your technical and creative potential.

What new skills will I aquire?
The ethos of the programme is design creation and business acumen. You will acquire high level technical skills in the three subject areas. This sound technical base will be a springboard for your personal development allowing you to establish your identity as an Applied Artist. Creative skills are underpinned by Professional Practice and Contextual Studies which give you the business potential and the historical knowledge to forge a career in the applied arts sector.

Success stories
The programme has run successful live projects with: Coats Crafts , designing products for the company's website, to promote sales and new audiences.

Artwork was designed and made for the Maternity Unit of the Hartlepool General Hospital NHS Trust . Students developed the theme of family and created ceramic and jewellery pieces which were then photographed and displayed in the unit.

What can I do next?
Students can become self employed designer makers, work in the voluntary sector and retail industries, develop careers in community arts and arts education including work with schools, youth clubs, gallery and museum education.

You can also progress onto the BA (Hons) Applied Arts for Enterprise programme which is a top up award for FdA graduates.
