Course aims:
This course is the introductory level of the Filmmaking courses at City College. It is designed to provide a thorough grounding in Filmmaking in order to allow students to progress on to the Digital Filmaking & Animation BTEC National Award and Diploma.
You will be introduced to digital video cameras and editing software and have the opportunity to gain experience of using them. Through realistic, industry related projects you will learn how to create a range of digital film, video and animation from first ideas through to finished product.
Through a mixture of practical lessons and vocational projects you will have the opportunity to develop your creative filmmaking skills. You will also be encouraged to increase your academic skills in order to access a full range of progression opportunities.

Course content:
You will gain an understanding of the video, television and film industries through taught sessions, visiting speakers, and practical assignments.
The core units for the course cover research techniques and pre-production techniques, with specialist units about understanding the video, television and film industries.

Facilities for students:

• Digital Video camera kits.
• Editing software running on iMac computers in our extensive editing suite.

Assessment: All assessment is through professionally relevant assignments. These are primarily practical units with supporting written work and documentation.

• 3 GCSEs grade D
• or BTEC Foundation Certificate in a related subject,
• or related Level 2 qualifications

Progression and links:
Most learners will progress on to Digital Filmmaking & Animation BTEC National Award and Diploma. The three courses we offer combine to provide all the skills development and qualifications necessary to progress to University.

Work experience opportunities:
As all assignments are modelled on professional practice, students will have the opportunity to develop a professional portfolio of work.
