COURSE DESCRIPTION
Fine Art and Crafts is an area demanding personal drive and commitment to exploring self-initiated projects. Whilst initially a source of personal satisfaction, work that is produced will be shown to have wider implications, with possible references to social, ethical, political or spiritual issues. This course will help to prepare you for a career within your chosen field of specialism.

Our aim is to make you into a confident, versatile and talented artist or craftsperson. You will continuously develop your skills by tackling challenging project briefs, often in collaboration with external agencies. Find out about the real worlds of art and craft and develop a close understanding of professional practice within these disciplines. You will be able to be involved in educational visits and exhibitions for an insight into Art and Crafts as they are practised nationally and internationally.

KEY FEATURES
  • Course structure will enable you to realise a personal and/or professional identity within Fine Art or associated crafts.
  • This programme aims to help you achieve your full potential by developing and challenging conventional art, craft or design theories through experimental practical application.
  • Your technical and critical skills will be broadened and enhanced to a high standard.

YEAR ONE (LEVEL 4)
You will follow a common first year programme, including the core modules as outlined below.
  • Historical/Contextual Studies: Art, Design and Craft 1
  • Drawing and Visualization
  • Computers in Art and Design
  • Studio Practice: Fine Art
  • Studio Practice: Ceramics
  • Studio Practice: Textiles

In addition to these you will take part in the following:
  • Educational visits
  • Live briefs
  • Visiting lecturers (practising artists and craftsmen/women)


YEAR TWO (LEVEL 5)
You will converge your specialist interests by historical and contextual research into an area of personal interest. Professional practice modules will encourage presentation skills and the elective modules will enable you to build a personal pathway leading to a specialised third year

YEAR THREE (LEVEL 6)
This is the consolidatory part of the course that primarily aims to provide the opportunity to compile a body of work including a professional portfolio and a practical exhibition, in order to enter the workplace. In order to achieve this you will study the following:
  • Dissertation
  • Live Brief
  • Final major Project Practical


ASSESSMENT
Your progress will be assessed via formal critiques with written feedback at the end of each project. You will be formally assessed at the end of each year and in the final semester you will demonstrate your skills through the production of a major project.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

A successful portfolio interview and the attainment of one of the following qualifications:
  • Minimum UCAS Tariff Points- 160
  • Diploma in Foundation Studies
  • BTEC National Diploma in a relevant subject- Merit/Distinction Profile
  • Adult Access to HE- Pass/Merit Profile
  • Accreditation of Prior Learning (APL)
  • Applications are invited from mature students without formal qualifications who can demonstrate a capability to pursue the course successfully.
