Is it right for me?
An ideal introduction for school leavers who seek a career in agriculture and the countryside. The First Diploma provides the practical skills and knowledge that will help students gain employment in the industry. Students acquire a wide range of knowledge, practical skills and industry experience from both their studies and their work experience within a local business. The course includes husbandry of crops and livestock, estate skills and machinery operation.
What qualifications will I need?
Interest and enthusiasm in farming and the countryside and the ability to cope with written work. English and Maths GCSEs at Grade D.
What will I be learning about?
The course consists of the following six units:
- Farm Animal Production
- Agricultural Crop Production
- Practical Land'based Skills
- Land'based Machinery Operation
- Industry and Organisations
- Work Related Experience
Key Skills in Numeracy, Communications and IT will also be developed ' the level will depend upon your qualifications at entry. Completion of a First Diploma is equivalent to 4 GCSEs at grades A* to C. Additional qualifications include NPTC Certificate of Competence in Tractor Driving and Related Operations. First Aid and Manual Handling are also taught.
What is involved?
Study at Kingston Maurward College 3 days per week and undertake work experience within a local farming business 2 days per week. The course is delivered by lectures, practical instruction, demonstration and visits. Approximately half the time in College involves practical work.
Where will it take me?
A practical career in farming or an allied industry. Progression is usually onto Work Based Learning (Apprenticeships) or the National Certificate / Diploma in Agriculture .
What else does the course include?
- Certificate of Competence in Tractor Driving and Related Operations
- NVQ Level 1 Land based Operations
What materials are required?
Outdoor clothing, overalls, waterproofs, steel toe cap safety boots, calculator, basic stationery. Tetanus protection is recommended.
What is next?
National Certificate / Diploma in Agriculture or Work Based Learning (Apprenticeships).
How will I be assessed?
Assignments, practical tests and observation of performance.
