About this course

Five C grades at GCSE overall, including GCSE Science. High grades in Maths and English are desirable. A very high level of commitment and initiative are necessary to complete assignments and extend knowledge through research.

Forensic Science BTEC Extended Diploma (Level 3)
Course content
The Level 3 Extended Diploma has 18 units. Specialist Forensic Science units are taken in year two. It is hoped to offer a Medical Science Extended Diploma in the future. Students taking the Extended Diploma are expected to study the Welsh Baccalaureate.

Each unit is taught by a specialist lecturer. Assignments are set regularly and marks are posted online. Students†progress is overseen by their personal tutor and by the course team as a whole.
Level 3 BTEC qualifications are A Level standard qualifications and attract the same UCAS points.
The Level 3 BTEC Extended Diploma is equivalent to three A-levels. The Level 3 Extended Diploma was formerly called the â€-National Diploma.†Level 3 BTECs equivalent to one or two A Levels are also available. See the details for the Diploma and the Subsidiary Diploma.
Duration
The Extended Diploma normally takes two years.
Qualifications gained
BTECs are graded on a Pass/Merit/Distinction scale. Pass is equivalent to E grade A Level. Merit is C grade and Distinction is A grade.
For the Extended Diploma, multiple grades are awarded. The best Extended Diploma score is DDD â€" three distictions, equal to three A grade A Levels.
Assessment
Every unit is assessed by coursework, which takes the form of essays, practical reports, presentations, minuted discussions etc. Most units have four assignments, which are divided into separate tasks â€" each with a deadline.

Progression
This is an ideal course for progression to Higher Education. Past students are studying for degrees in Medical Genetics, Biology, Paramedic Training, Forensic Science, Dental Technology, Criminology and Biochemistry.
