AS Further Maths

Is this course right for me?

This course is for learners who have a strong interest in Mathematics and a proven ability in algebraic processing.

What will I be learning?

This course is for learners who have a strong interest in Mathematics and a proven ability in algebraic processing. In order to succeed you will need to be prepared to work with highly complex problems. It extends from the AS Mathematics curriculum and there is an emphasis on pure mathematics which is studied in great depth. There is also the opportunity to study an area of applied mathematics.

If you are planning a career involving the use of complex mathematics then further mathematics will be an excellent subject to support your areas of interest.

The course consists of 3 units, all assessed by examinations lasting 1.5 hours.
FP1 and FP2 are pure maths units that cover areas such as algebra, trigonometry, sequences and series, graph-sketching, co-ordinate geometry and advanced calculus. These modules will add to the mathematical knowledge and skills required to cope with advanced mathematical problems.

In addition, there is one applied unit, to be selected according to your strengths and needs.

How will I learn?

You will acquire new knowledge and skills through teacher-led worked examples and you will have the opportunity to develop these skills in each session by working through examples and problems, either individually or in small groups.

It is essential that you have good listening skills and are able to concentrate for long periods, asking questions when you do not understand.

You will be given regular homework exercises that we will expect you to complete and hand in on time. There will also be regular tests that will assess whether you are working to your full potential.

It is important that you attend fully and keep up with the workload.

What else might I want to know?

Many students find the approach and depth of A Level Mathematics radically different from their experiences at GCSE. This is especially so in the study of Further Mathematics. A Level requires much more algebraic precision and a genuine understanding and enjoyment of the concepts. The questions in the examination will be posed in such a way that they test whether you truly understand the mathematical principles that you have encountered in the course.

Students with a genuine interest and enjoyment in mathematical problem solving will find Mathematics challenging but fulfilling.

Each module is supported by a specialist text book, written under the guidance of the examining board.

The subject combines well with A Level Biology, A Level Chemistry, A Level Physics, A Level Computing and A Level Psychology.

What can I do afterwards?

Mathematics underlies all of modern science, technology and industry, as well as economics, finance and design. There is a national shortage of mathematical specialists, and employers in all areas value mathematicians because of their skills. Accountancy, finance, computing, banking, lecturing and teaching are just some of the areas where mathematicians are in demand. Employers range from large multinationals, the Civil Service and local authorities to smaller companies and research institutions.
An A Level in Mathematics will also enable you to progress to Higher Education in a number of rewarding areas.
