This popular A Level course gives you the knowledge to understand how government works particularly in the U.K. but also in other countries.

What will I be learning?

You will develop a broad knowledge and understanding of the political system of the U.K. The course concentrates on people and the elctoral system,as well as governing Modern Britain.

At Unit 1, you will study the following topics:
? Participation and voting behaviour (How and why people vote, who can vote and who do they vote for?)
? Electoral Systems (What they are, what do we use in Britain, what about other systems used throughout the world?)
? Political Parties (What are the main political parties in Britain? What do they stand for? What about other political groups?)
? Pressure Groups and Protest Movements (You will look at examples of pressure groups and success and failures on government policy.

At Unit 2, you will find out how Britain is governed and the topics studied will be:
? The British Constitution (What is it? Origins of the constitution
? Parliament (What makes up Parliament?)
??? The Core Executive and Multi Level Governance (National and local government systems)

How will I learn?

You will learn through interactive lectures which will consist of note making, plenty of discussion, debate and presentations. You will be required to work in groups and on your own on different occasions.

Lecturers will use relevant media based material such as appropriate television programmes (Prime Ministers Questions, Question Time and other topical programmes).

You will be required to study, research and prepare work in your own time to share with the class in presentation and discussion format. You will be encouraged to read around the various topics that are being taught and to keep abreast with current and topical issues that will appear in the news and on relevant television programmes. You will also learn by attending various trips (for example to London and the Houses of Parliament), conferences and through invited guests to the college, such as local council members and MPs.

What else might I want to know?

If you choose to study Government and Politics, you must be well motivated and ready to learn. Essentially this is a written subject taught at a fast pace.

Assessments will include weekly essays, mock exams, presentation and debate.

You will need to purchase all relevant reading materials.

What can I do afterwards?

Many students who have taken the A Level in Government and Politics go on to study Politics at university. From there you might become a researcher, join local or national government or even start on the path to become a future Prime Minister! But there are other job options too. If you fancy a career in journalism, media, teaching, or work in the legal profession this course is very useful.

As with many other subjects, Government and Politics will equip you with various skills that would be beneficial to any career. With good literacy skills, skills of debate, discussion and presentation you will be able to think on your feet, express points of view and ask challenging questions.
