Hairdressing NVQ 2 Full Time / Day release

Course Aims:
The course is an excellent grounding for all students looking to develop the basic skills of hairdressing. It is varied and flexible, leading to National Vocational Qualification (NVQ) Level 2 in Hairdressing. Full-time students will aim to complete NVQ Level 1 in the first two terms and progress to Level 2 for the remaining four terms.

Course Content:
The course is broadly based and is structured to satisfy the needs of the examining lead body and students. The course is divided between practical assessment and underpinning theory. All hairdressing subjects are covered, with additional input by commercial companies and specialist tutors to enhance the students' knowledge. All students are encouraged and invited to participate in the college's hairdressing competitions. You will study:

• Hair and Scalp Diagnosis
• Shampooing/Conditioning
• All types of Cutting Techniques
• Blow Drying, Setting and Dressing Hair and Long Hair Work.
• Permanent Waving
• Colouring
• Selling techniques
• Teamwork/Improving your performance
• How to give clients a good impression of yourself and your organisation
• Health and Safety

All students must study Key skills if they are not already qualified to the required standards in IT, maths and English.

Progression:
General salon stylist, specialist (perming or colouring), technical representative, demonstrator for fashion houses, teaching in salons, staff trainer, self-employment. NVQ Level 3 Hairdressing course is available on successful completion of Level 2.

Exam:
There is continuous assessment of practical work. The theory element of the course is by written portfolio. Evidence must be gathered during the year to satisfy both tutor and external moderator.

Professional Appearance:
Smart appearance, good personal hygiene. Uniform top, black trousers/skirt and black covered-toe shoes.

Other Costs:
Kit: 185 approx.
Uniform top: 15 approx. Full time students will require 2.
Trip to Hair & Beauty Fair: 20 approx.
College enrolment fee 15, VTCT registration fee 16 ( first registration only ), exam fee 54 and possibly course fees depending on personal circumstance and employment status. Please seek advice from Student Services.

Duration:
The college offers flexible training to fit the needs of students of all ages. The NVQ 2 Hairdressing is a two-year programme which can be studied in three separate ways:
Full-time - for mature students. Three days (Child care needs considered) . Placement day optional. Plus Key Skills.
Full-time - for under-19s. Three days in college, plus key skills - may include 1 late night.
Day Release - two years. One day a week for students in Hairdressing employment to include Key skills, or one year with previous experience/ Level 1
NB (Day release) Skills Scan will be carried out at Induction to confirm suitability of a one or two year course.
