The Applied GCE in Health and Social Care will appeal to you if you want to work in the Health and Social Care sector. The course covers a variety of areas such as: Health, Care of older people, Individuals with specific needs and also Early Years (care and education). The course is the equivalent of 2 A Levels so you will normally take other courses alongside. Year 1 is equivalent to 2 x AS and year 2, 2 x A2.
What is the aim of the course?
The Applied GCE will help you develop the skills and confidence to work in Health and Social Care. You will find out about the needs of different client groups and how they are supported in different Health and Social Care settings. This course includes essential work placement so you develop practical skills and work alongside Health and Social Care Professionals.
What will I study?
In year 1 you will study:

- Communication and Values
- Positive Care Environments
- Social Aspects and Lifestyle Choices
- Activities for Health and Wellbeing
- Public Health
In year 2 you will study:
- Meeting Individual Needs
- Promoting Health and Wellbeing
- Investigating Disease
- Using and Understanding Research
- Social Issues and Welfare Needs
- Understanding Human Behaviour
You will be expected to complete a work placement block in each of the two years in 2 different Health and Social Care settings.
How will I be assessed?
You will be assessed through a combination of assignments and external examinations.
What can I do next?
This qualification will help you to progress to Higher Education on diploma or degree courses related to Social Work, Nursing, Paremedic or Occupational Therapy. We work in partnerhsip with Sheffield Hallam University, and they will guarantee an interview for nursing courses provided you meet the entry requirements.
If you do not already have Grade C in GCSE English, Maths or Science, it is important that you re-take these to make sure that you have the qualifications you need for applications to HE and health related career routes.
Additional Information:
You will need to pass an enhanced CRB check before being allowed out on a work placement. The College will subsidise the cost of the CRB but you may have to make a contribution. Some placements will also require a medical check.
