What is this course about?
  • The course looks at some important historical issues in breadth as well as in depth.
  • It helps you to understand how the world has become what it is and your place in it. It develops your ability to think critically and reach conclusions based on evidence.


What topics will I study?

At AS :
  • Russian History 1881-1953 : Tsarist Russia before and after the 1905 Revolution; the First World War and the Revolutions of 1917; the consolidation of Communist power; Stalin's dictatorship; the Great Patriotic War.
  • The Experience of Warfare in Britain 1854-1929 : the Crimean, Boer and First World Wars and their impact on British society.


At A2:
  • German History 1900-1945: Imperial Germany before the First World War; the debate over the causes of the war; the Weimar Republic; the Third Reich and the debate about popular consent in the Nazi State; Germany in World War Two.
  • Coursework unit: USA from Reconstruction to Civil Rights 1877-1980 â€" the African-American experience.


How will my work be assessed?

At AS:
  • Two end-of-year you exams: Paper 1 has an essay question and Paper 2 is based around source material.


At A2:
  • Coursework essay and a personal enquiry into a significant issue arising out of the chosen topic
  • End-of-year exam testing your ability to assess different historical interpretations in the light of primary evidence.

What knowledge do I need to succeed?
  • Although previous historical knowledge is helpful it is not essential.
  • An interest in current affairs and a willingness to read widely in a range of texts is desirable.


What skills will I need to develop to succeed?
  • To succeed in History you will need to absorb a lot of quite complex information quickly and to write fluently and concisely.
  • You will need to develop useful study skills including note-making and essay writing.
  • You will also need to read, understand and evaluate a range of primary and secondary sources.


What are the lessons like?
  • We use a range of teaching and learning methods: formal presentations by the tutor; discussions; group work; presentations; independent research; e-learning.
  • We aim to take account of different learning styles and learner experience.
