Description
The HNC is a general computing award, which allows candidates to gain skills and knowledge in software development, technical support and core skills. This course is suitable for those employed or wishing to be employed, in roles such as computer technician, trainee software developer or IT help-desk officer. The course consists of a total of 12 credits over a 1 year period. This course is also available by part-time, day release and progress is being made towards offering the course in Open Learning format.
The specific aims of the HNC Computing award are:
To prepare students for employment in an IT/Computing-related post at technician level such as a technical support position or junior software development role.
To develop a range of contemporary vocational skills (i.e. technical computing skills) relating to the use and support of IT systems appropriate to employment at technician (or equivalent) level.
To provide a flexible curriculum to meet the needs of candidates in employment, recognising their existing experience and skills.
To prepare students for progression to further study in Computing or a related discipline.
To obtain an HNC Computing it is necessary to gain a total of 12 credits: 6 credits from mandatory (core) units and 6 credits from optional units.
A loan will be available for eligible students from the Students Loan Company, in addition, students from low income families may apply for non-repayable awards. Application forms are made available on acceptance onto the course.
Non full-time offerings are funded by self / employee / LEC.

Progression
CAREER POSSIBILITIES
The course will allow you on completion to work within a software development or technical support environment. You will be able to write software programs, develop computer systems, or be employed in a computer technician or IT support role.
OPPORTUNITIES FOR FURTHER STUDY
The award has been designed to allow candidates to progress on successful completion, to an HND in Computing. A further one year commitment would lead to a BSc in Computing.
