Who is the programme for? There is a continuing growth in the demand for business computing across all areas of industry and commerce. This programme is designed for students over 18 years of age who are planning a career in field of business computing. The Internet and Business Technologies Foundation Degree will enable you to develop your knowledge and skills to secure work in the computing industry or to progress to a higher level of study (e.g. an Honours Degree).

What will I study? The foundation degree has been designed by Sheffield Hallam University through close collaboration with employers. Sheffield Hallam University have defined the content of the programme, while St Helens College delivers and assesses it. Upon completion of the programme students will receive a Sheffield Hallam University Foundation Degree Certificate. The IBT programme will give you the opportunity to build technical and professional skills. Each year requires successful completion of six modules including:- Year 1 Modules: Business Analysis in the workplace Business Design in the workplace Computer Technologies Mathematics in the workplace Programming Concepts Web Technologies Year 2 Modules: Applied Database Systems E-Business Technologies Planning and Project Management Work Placement (option) Other options are available There will be an opportunity to study towards Microsoft Certified Professional certification in some subject areas (Windows Server Administration). Accreditation of Prior Certified Learning (APCL) or Accreditation of Prior Experiential Learning (APEL) is available for students with appropriate levels of qualifications and/or experience. Entry to the Programme?

How is it assessed? You will be assessed both individually and as a team member. There are a number of assessment methods including: practical and research based coursework assignments, time-constrained phase tests, occasional examinations, individual and group-based presentations, portfolio submissions, report writing, demonstrations, work based learning and practical project work. At the beginning of each semester you will be issued with a module handbook that details the assessments for that period. This will help to plan your workload and manage your time.

Future prospects? The programme will provide a platform for entry into the computing industry or onto continuing Higher Education at Honours Degree level. Upon successful completion of the Foundation Degree you may wish to take up the guaranteed progression route to Sheffield Hallam University with BSc/BSc (Hons) Internet and Business Technologies, which will also be offered via distance learning based at St Helens College.

When will the programme start? This programme will start in September 2010.

How long will it take? This full time programme will take two years to complete. There will be two 16 week semesters per academic year (September to January and February to June). It is expected that students will attend college for 16 hours each week.

What about the Money? St Helens College is committed to providing value for money higher education programmes, therefore programme fees for Honours Degrees and Foundation Degrees for 2010/11 will be 2,100* per year for full time programmes.

How do I apply? You should apply through the UCAS system using code G400 FdSc/ . However, mature students may apply directly to the College in the first instance, but will eventually have to apply through UCAS.

Entry Requirements
All applicants will be considered. You must be aged 18 by 31st August 2009. You will need to have studied at A/AS level, AVCE or National Diploma level or equivalent and will be expected to have achieved a UCAS tariff of 100 points in an appropriate subject. Entry from the following routes is also acceptable: Access to HE, HNC or Professional Qualifications. Applications from mature students with relevant experience will be welcomed. The normal minimum qualifications required for mature entrants (21 years and above) is 14 points (including 12 at Level 6) from a recognised Access course; a pass in a recognised introductory / foundation course; or business experience in the computing industry and IT related skills.
