About this course

Students should a standard of literacy and numeracy supported by a general education equivalent to four GCSEs at D-G or work experience, other Level 1 or 2 qualifications, a good understanding of skills required within the area of art and design i.e. a portfolio of work.

Entry Requirements

Essential Criteria:

• A BTEC Foundation Certificate in Art and Design; or

• A minimum of four GCSEs at grades G or above; or

• Equivalent qualifications and relevant experience relating to art and design (portfolio of work)

In circumstances where there are more applications for the course than there are places available, the College reserves the right to ask for higher grades.

Course Content
This course is made up of eight units - six mandatory core units that everyone takes and two specialist units. The specialist units enable students to study a particular area in more depth.

All students take six Core Units:

• Contextual References in Art and Design

• 2D Visual Communication

• 3D Visual Communication

• Using Ideas to Explore, Develop and Produce Art and Design

• Building an Art and Design Portfolio

• Working in the Art and Design Industry

Specialists Units:

• Working with Graphic Design Brief

• Working with Visual Arts Brief

If you are accepted onto this course without a Grade C or above in Math’s and/or English you will be required to complete the relevant Essential Skills qualification. This will be a compulsory part of your timetable.

Course Aims

To introduce students to a broad range of diagnostic skills in the area of Art and Design. This is a nationally recognised vocational qualification which can be used to assist students in gaining employment or as an entry qualification for study on to an advanced programme.

Assessment Methods

All units are internally assessed and graded and the overall grade for the qualification is awarded at the end of the academic year. Eight units must be completed to gain a full award.

Progression Routes
A Level 2 BTEC Diploma prepares you for employment or a progression opportunity to study further onto a more advanced course such as the Level 3 BTEC Extended Diploma. With additional training students can go into careers such as Graphic Design, Fashion Retail, Photography and Window Display.
