Course aims:
This course is designed to get you qualified to NVQ Level 2 standards. It builds on the experience and knowledge you have gained on site. The work you carry out each day at work will be used to assess you against the national standards for this award.
The NVQ 2 is the industry recognised qualification that is valued by employers and is the minimum you will need to work as a bricklayer on site.
The Health and Safety test that you will sit as part of this qualification is required to get you the Construction Skills Certification Scheme (CSCS) card that employers now require all construction workers to have on site.
By the end of this course you will feel confident and skilled in the principles of general work safety, erecting masonry structures, laying domestic drainage, finishing concrete, plastering and maintaining slate and tile roofing.
You may wish to apply for a wide range of jobs in the construction industry, or further your skills

  • PLACE AND FINISH NON-SPECIALIST CONCRETE
  • PLASTER AND RENDER SURFACES
  • MAINTAIN SLATE AND TILE ROOFING


Facilities for students:
Students will be based at our City College East campus, where we have extensive and excellent facilities for practical and theory work.
These include: full-size, all-weather and grass, football pitches, indoor
sportshall, gym and dance studio.
For talented sportspeople we have a number of College teams that compete against other local and national colleges.

Tutors:
The Bricklaying department is staffed by experienced and enthusiastic tutors who have many years experience on site as bricklayers, as well as teaching experience. This will enable students to receive excellent training that will help them in their search for employment. All staff are experienced A1 vocational NVQ assessors.

Assessment: This qualification is assessed by you generating work based evidence which your assessor will judge in college. A site based visit may also be arranged.
There are mandatory knowledge and understanding questions to be completed.
A pass in the CAA Health & Safety test is also a requirement of this award.

Pre-entry preparation:
Some background knowledge of the skills and techniques used in the industry would help and students may find it useful to do some background reading using some of the trade journals and press reviews of the industry.
Basic skills in communication and the use of the internet would also be an asset as research forms much of the underpinning knowledge.
Watching construction based programmes and discussion groups would also help in preparing you with the terminology and phrases used in the industry

Progression and links:
Students may progress to the Level 3 NVQ in Trowel Occupations.
Alternatively, the NVQ L2 Trowel Occupations will allow you to gain work as a qualified bricklayer in the construction industry.

Work experience opportunities:
It is a requirement of this qualification that you are employed in the construction industry in a bricklaying capacity.

Qualification in Context and Future Opportunities: National Vocational Qualifications are the modern qualification of competence and work in the Construction Industry. As a trades person, Level II will enable you to carry out bricklaying and associated work with competence.

Below are the fees for 09/10.

Home/EU students tuition fees (per year) : 600.00

If you are under 19 on 31st August 2009 you do not have to pay Tuition Fees, the College Registration, Awarding Body Registration or Exam/Assessment Fees. However, you will have to pay any Resource Fees. Under 19s entering Higher Education will have to pay full costs.
