Why should I study AS Level Business?
This course will provide learners with a broad understanding of business and an in depth knowledge of its functions. It will develop written and numerical skills, alongside working with others and problem solving capabilities. The course will enable students to progress
- to further study on the A2 second year of the programme
- to enter employment in the business and retailing sectors
What will be studied on the course?
Learners will study 2 modules, which are as follows:
Unit 1: Planning and financing a business.
Unit 2: Managing a business.
Outside speakers may be arranged to give an overview of higher education opportunities, whilst you may also be given an opportunity to spend a week abroad, visiting businesses in a major European city.
When does the course start and how long does it last?
This course starts in September and lasts for one academic year ending in June. Progression can then be made on to the 2nd year, which is the A2 programme.
What qualifications are needed to do the course?
- A minimum of 5 GCSE's at grades A to C
- These must include English and Maths
Where is the course based?
At our Lanchester campus.
How will the learner be assessed?
The 2 modules will be assessed via 1 hour 15minute and 1 hour 30 minute written exams as follows:
Unit 1: Short answer questions based on a mini case study.
Unit 2: Compulsory, multi-part data response questions.
How much will the course cost?
Set texts will be made available during class time, and the Learning Resource Centre is well stocked with appropriate titles. However you may wish to purchase revision guides at up to £20 approx to add breadth to your study. You may be asked to cover the cost of transport for any visits arranged during the course, and if you choose to go on a business trip abroad, you will be expected to cover most, if not all, of the costs involved.
What progression routes are available?
On successful completion of this course learners could progress to
- the A2 second year of the full programme for people wanting to go into Higher Education eg. for a Business Degree leading to a business career, or post graduate teaching degree.
- employment in the business or retailing sectors.
