AS Level History

Why should I study AS Level History?
Everything that happens in the present is based on what happened in the past. Studying History therefore helps understanding of the present enabling us to make sense of the world in which we live. Studying History also develops highly the marketable skills of evaluation, analysis and the ability to appreciate different points of view.

What will be studied on the course?
Students must study one unit of British history and one unit of the history of another country.

Unit 1 Britain 1906 - 51.
This covers the massive changes that took place in Britain in the first half of the twentieth century including the two world wars, the Depression of the 1930's and the setting up of the welfare state.

Unit 2. The Struggle for Civil Rights 1945-68
Black people were taken to the USA as slaves but long after slavery had been abolished they found that they were still being treated as second class citizens. This unit studies the reaction of black people to this and their fight for equal civil rights 1945 - 68.

When does the course start and how long does it last?
The course starts in September and ends the following June.

What qualifications are needed to do the course?

  • You need at least 5 GCSE's at grade C or above.
  • If you studied History you must have at least a grade C.
  • If you did not study History at GCSE, your overall GCSE results will be looked at but you must have at least a grade C in English.


Where is the course based?
The course is based at the Lanchester site.

How will the learner be assessed?
Unit 1 is assessed by an exam lasting one hour and fifteen minutes. The student must answer two questions, each consisting of two parts.

Unit 2 is assessed by an exam lasting one hour and thirty minutes. The student must answer one two-part question based on sources and one two part question using their own knowledge.

How much will the course cost?
Text books are provided and the LRC is well stocked. You are expected to provide your own paper, pens etc.

What progression routes are available?
Most students will progress to A2 and then to university although AS is a qualification in its own right.
