There are visits to TV studios and free film screenings at cinemas. You will also have the opportunity to participate in community media projects. We have strong links with media professionals and we regularly invite these professionals to the College to work with students.

Media: BTEC First Diploma
The BTEC First Diploma is a practical work-related course. The course is aimed at students who wish to pursue a vocational media course that also prepares them for Advanced level courses or employment. It is equivalent to four GCSE grades A*-C.

Course details
You will develop practical skills to enable you to produce your own media products as well as developing your writing skills. You will research and analyse media, look at careers in media industries and writing for the media, and produce videos, print products and sound.

How is it assessed?
Assessment is through a coursework portfolio. Students will also take Key Skills for which they will produce a portfolio and take an examination.

Course duration
One year full-time.

What do I need to study this subject?
You should have GCSE grades A*-D which should include at least a D in English Language, or a Merit or Distinction in an appropriate level 1 course. You will need to show a piece of media work at interview.

Where can this lead me?
Students who achieve a Merit or Distinction at this level may progress to the BTEC National Diploma or a similar Advanced course. The course helps develop skills necessary for employment in the media.

What are the enrichment opportunities?
