Course programme
Media Studies is an exciting and growing area of study. The AS level is made up of three units: unit 1. Looks at the basics such as genre and narrative. We will apply these theories to various media texts such as: pop videos, MySpace web pages', TV shows, film extracts, magazine covers and so on. In unit 2. we will look at how different groups in society, such as teenagers, are represented in the media. We will analyse how people consume and receive media texts and engage in debates such as whether video games or films can encourage violence or copycat crimes. The third unit is coursework and you will research, plan and produce a portfolio of two pieces of work such as web page designs or magazine front covers.
Entry requirements
Entry requirements for this course will be four GCSEs (with a C grade at English).
What will I study?
You will study how media texts, such as: TV programmes, songs, game shows', magazines and websites are targeted to appeal to specific social groups and fans. You will study how films, for example follow patterns and use stars to appeal. You will have the opportunity to carry out your own media research and apply it to making your own media texts. You will learn how to market and promote media texts to specific audiences.
How will I be assessed?
There are two examinations, unit one and unit two, which can be taken in June or January. Your portfolio is also assessed.
Career Opportunities & Progression
Media is the literature of the 21st Century and is relevant to all areas of study. Advertising, marketing and promotion are areas of career opportunities as well as opportunities in media development and production. Past media students have gone on to become games designers, work on camera for the BBC and web designers.
