Attendance
You are expected to be available to attend college Monday to Thursday 9am to 5.30pm and Friday 9am to 4.30pm.

Course Description
This is a level 1 pre-apprenticeship qualification that covers the technical needs for today†s motor vehicle repair industry, including basic processes, principles and foundation skills. It provides essential knowledge for working on vehicles in all types of garages, dealerships and maintenance depots.

With all motor vehicle courses students will complete a preparation for employment course prior to enrolling on the main programme.

Course Structure
It is a learning programme which involves students studying both the theory and practical aspects of light vehicles in the following:
  • Basic Construction and Layouts Basic Front Wheel Alignment
  • Basic Testing of Vehicle Charging Systems
  • Basic Removal and Replacement of
  • Clutches, Exhaust systems, Batteries
  • Suspension Dampers, Braking System Components, Standard Light Vehicle Tyres
  • Students also gain a broad knowledge and understanding of health and safety in the workplace and other skills associated with working in a garage.


Course Assessment
The student†s knowledge is assessed by set practical assessments in a motor vehicle workshop environment, â€-on-line†multiple-choice testing and theory assessments set by the college.

The course requires you to develop your key skills (communication, Application of Number or ICT) one of which will be examined during the course.

Course Costs
There are no course fees if you are under 19 years old on 31 August 2010. However, you may have to pay for textbooks, personal kits, uniforms, trips and personal stationery. You will be informed of these at your interview.

A £50 charge for course materials is applied to all full time engineering courses.

Course Enrichment
Activities such as trips and visits will be arranged, which are beneficial to this course and your learning. These activities are optional and additional fees will be charged to you. Details will be provided at the time of interview.

Course Progression
Successful students can progress on to a level 2 Fast Fit programme, or to a Vehicle Technician course.

Course Career Prospects

  • To work for franchised dealerships

    Independent fast fit centres

    National fast fit chains

    Fast fit technicians work in separate workshops or along side other vehicle technicians. Their main duties will include:

  • Testing batteries and other engine parts to find faults

  • Checking tyres and exhausts for defects

  • Replacing or repairing faulty parts Balancing and re-aligning wheels

  • Offering customers advice on simple maintenance issues
