City College is the leading provider of Motor Vehicle Studies and has been training young men and women since 1946, supporting students to achieve in their studies which are all industry led. The Motor Vehicle department is one of the most successful in the College.
Our Full-time courses are all Vocational VRQ courses and are certified and recognised by the Institute of the Motor Vehicle
Anyone qualified to Level 2 or who has relevant occupational experience or is a keen hands car maintenance enthusiast. This qualification is ideal for service technicians and anyone keen to deepen their knowledge of the Motor Industry from a repair and refit perspective. Level 2 is the mid point to becoming a qualified mechanic - a journey which will present a host of employment opportunities from fast fit to Formula One
All our courses involve students studying both the theory and practical aspects of light vehicle maintenance including health and safety and other skills associated with working in a garage and this blend ensures a diverse range of learning opportunities for our students. No two days are the same!
Students will learn key skills and gain an in insight into light vehicle technology. Through our enrichment opportunities and tutorial program students will see a growth in their personal and social development.

Course content:
On this course you will study:
  • Carrying Out Routine Vehicle Maintenance
  • Removing and Replacing: Engine units and components
  • Electrical auxiliary units and components
  • Chassis units and components


Tutors:
  • Steve Philliben, Personal Tutor for all groups and Team leader For Motor Vehicle Department. Successfully managing medium to large organisation since 1996.
  • Frank Tomline, Motor Vehicle Lecturer for all Levels. A qualified engineer Frank has been teaching 1991.
  • Phil Hill, Motor Vehicle Lecturer for all Levels. Phil recently joined the department and was previously running a very successful repair garage in Brighton.
  • Greg Moss, Motor Vehicle Lecturer for all Levels. Greg recently made the leap from Workshop technician to Motor Vehicle lecturer
  • Brian Lawrence, an old hand Brian has been with us since 1974! Brian is both a Motor Vehicle Lecturer and workshop technician. Brian can fix anything!
  • Ronnie Dawson, a qualified Aircraft Engineer who ran a successful garage specialising in the repair and sale of Japanese cars, Motor Vehicle Lecturer for all Levels.

Progression and links:
After successfully completing this course, you may wish to develop your knowledge and skills to an advanced level, or prepare for a supervisory role by studying the Level 3 Light Vehicle qualification.
Alternatively, you may wish to seek employment within the motor industry in one of a variety of jobs including, Customer Service, Apprenticeship Light Vehicle and Fast Fit.

Work experience opportunities:
Motor Vehicle is well known to the Motor Trade business community in the city. The college has been the cities biggest provider of trained mechanics since 1946.
