This is a practical qualification for students embarking on a career in the horticultural industry and is suitable for all ages. The course provides a broad'based grounding in horticulture with a wide range of practical skills and background knowledge. Emphasis is on practical knowledge.

Entry into second year of the National Diploma in Horticulture course is possible for those who successfully complete this course.

What qualifications will I need?
Enthusiasm, relevant practical experience and the ability to cope with written work. Four GCSEs minimum Grade C or equivalent (including English Language and Maths), First Diploma at merit or NVQ level 2. Mature students will be considered even if they lack formal entry qualifications.

What is involved?
One year at Kingston Maurward College. Lectures, demonstrations, practical instruction and industrial visits.

Where will it take me?
A responsible job in practical horticulture or an allied industry such as gardening journalism, garden design, landscape gardening, retail management.

  • Certificate of Competence in Safe Use of Pesticides
  • C&G Certificate in Gardening
  • Chainsaws/Brushcutters

What materials are required?
Practical clothing, overalls, waterproofs, steel toe'capped safety boots, basic stationery. Tetanus protection is recommended.

What is next?
Option to continue on to the second year of the National Diploma in Horticulture.

How will I be assessed?
A range of continuous assessments including written assignments, practical skills tests, externally set assessments.
