Is it right for me?
The National Diploma is a well respected course equivalent to three A levels and can lead to progression into work or Higher Education. The first year of the course is shared with the National Certificate in Agriculture. In the second year, a further 6 units are taken to gain the National Diploma in Agriculture. As part of the course, a large range of certificates of competence can be chosen to enhance career prospects. Successful completion of the course leads to payment at Grade 4 on the Agricultural Wages Board Scales.
What qualifications will I need?
Four GCSEs at Grade C or above including Maths and English or equivalent. A First Diploma at Distinction level, NVQ level 2, or Intermediate GNVQ with appropriate levels of Maths and English. Mature applicants without formal qualifications will also be considered. Applicants with the NCA can go directly into the second year of the course.
What will I be learning about?
As part of the NDA you will complete the following units:
- Business planning
- Animal management
- Combinable crops
- Workshop skills
- Farm habitat management
Certificates of competence available include spraying, chainsaws, use of materials handler, ATVs, milking and safe use of veterinary medicines. Students will also be given the opportunity to develop their practical skills on the College estate, which will include occasional weekend and evening duties. The course includes a week long study tour to Austria. Key skills development in communication, application of number and IT according to prior achievement and interest.
What is involved?
Two years at Kingston Maurward. Lectures, demonstrations, practical instruction, industrial visits and study tours. Students will have the opportunity to gain a range of proficiency tests and Farm Records and Accounts.
Where will it take me?
Supervisory or managerial post in farming or an allied industry.
What else does the course include?
Farm Records and Accounts. Certificate of Competence in a range of machinery operations.
What materials are required?
Practical clothing, overalls, waterproofs, steel toe'capped safety boots, basic stationery including a calculator. Tetanus protection is recommended.
What is next?
HNC at Kingston Maurward or Foundation degree or degree at other institutions.
How will I be assessed?
A range of continuous assessments including written assignments and practical tests.
