About this course
Minimum of 5 GCSEs at grade C or above including English, or BTEC First Diploma in Sport (merit). Motivated mature students and over 18s on the basis of diagnostic test results and references.

What will I be learning?
The study of sport is now a well defined discipline and includes both practical and theoretical elements. Students will study anatomy & physiology, exercise physiology, sport nutrition, sports psychology as well as the sociological components involved with sport. The course offers a number of units which include: the body in action; sport in society; nutrition for sports performance; sports injuries; sports massage & therapy; fitness testing; training & fitness.
Students will also have the opportunity to undertake additional qualifications including: Sports Leaders UK level 1 Award in Community Sports Leadership, First Aid Certificate, Level 1 Coaching Awards in football, basketball, badminton, etc., National Pool Lifeguard Qualification, Sports Leaders UK level 3 Award in Higher Sports Leadership, YMCA Gym Instructor course, YMCA Exercise to Music.
As part of the course there will also be opportunities to go on various overseas sports trips and residentials. These have recently included Barcelona, Milan, Kenya as well as top class sporting occasions.
How will I learn?
The course consists of 18 units over 2 years. If you complete your 18 units this is the equivalent to 3 'A' Levels (you have the possibility of attaining 360 UCAS points). You are graded at Pass, Merit & Distinction level for each unit. You are assessed through a series of assignments which produce a portfolio of coursework. Assessment methods may include the following; writing reports, presentations, practicals, video analysis and witness observation/statements.
What else might I want to know?
During practicals or whilst representing the College in the community you will be expected to wear appropriate physical education/sports kit; T-shirt or training top. A good standard of dress will be worn whilst taking part in practicals. You will also be required to purchase a course book/books to support your learning at college. There will be costs involved in these additional qualifications and these will be discussed at interview and Induction.
What can I do afterwards?
You can progress to a degree in sports/exercise science, sports
development or PE/sports teacher or alternatively a career within
the sports/leisure industry.
