Course description
The qualification provides an opportunity for candidates to explore and prepare for employment in the field of Sport or Uniformed Services.

The course is based at Doncaster College's Hub site.

The course is intended primarily for school leavers interested in a career in Sports or Uniformed Services (Army, RAF, prison Service, Fire or Police).

There are no academic requirements. Entry will be at the discretion of the College.

The course involves a mix of theory and practical work. Candidates should be prepared for a high level of physical participation and will spend some time outdoors.

It aims to develop candidates' skills and personal qualities in preparation for all areas of employment. It also provides an opportunity to develop problem solving skills.

It is not anticipated that candidates would transfer into a Sport/Uniformed Service job immediately after completing this course. Rather, it provides a basis for further study and career development.

Successful completion of the course could lead to progression onto the Level 2 BTEC First Certificate/Diplomas in Sport or Public Services.

PE kit and walking boots are required, some outdoor clothing is provided. Learners will be expected to wear a â€-uniform†of polo shirt, walking trousers and waterproof jacket.

Course Structure
The NCFE Level 1 course extends over a one year period. The course is divided into 6 mandatory units and 2 optional units. Candidates must successfully complete 6 mandatory units and one optional unit.

The Mandatory Units are:
  • Investigate Work Opportunities
  • Wellbeing and Physical Fitness
  • Develop Team Working Skills
  • Self Discipline and Development
  • Basic Map Reading and Navigation
  • Health, Safety and Emergency Care


Candidates also choose one option from:
  • Participate in Competitive Sports
  • Participate in Adventurous Outdoor Activities


Candidates may also be given the opportunity to achieve one or more of the following:

  • First Aid Qualification
  • Outdoor Activity Qualifications
  • Duke of Edinburgh Award


Course Assessment
The course is internally assessed by means of performance observations, assignments, presentations, reports and projects.

Course Costs
There are no course fees if you are under 19 years old on 31 August 2010. However, you may have to pay for textbooks, personal kits, uniforms, trips and personal stationery. You will be informed of these at your interview.

Approximately £150 is required for uniform, residential visits and other entry fees throughout the year eg canoeing and climbing

Course Enrichment
Activities such as trips and visits will be arranged, which are beneficial to this course and your learning. These activities are optional and additional fees will be charged to you. Details will be provided at the time of interview.

Course Career Prospects
Employment in varied assistant roles including Outdoor Adventure Activity Centre Assistant but after further study job opportunities include the Fire Service, Police, Army, RAF, Prison Service, Ambulance Service and Customs and Excise.
