NPTC Work Based Animal Care Diploma Level 2Duration
One Year Full Time

Attendance
You will be expected to be available to attend college for a minimum of 3 days per week plus a half day work experience.

Course Description
The course is suitable for those who have achieved a Level 1 qualification in animal care or have substantial relevant experience. It will provide you with the skills and vocational qualifications so that you can work in an animal related environment. It includes a large amount of practical, outdoor training. You will also be required to attend key skills sessions up to level 2 after and initial assessment. You must commit to 100% attendance.

Course Structure
The following mandatory units must be completed to achieve the qualification:

  • Health and Safety

  • Personal Development

  • Maintaining the health and wellbeing of animals

  • Feeding, watering and nutrition

  • Establishing and maintaining animal accommodation

  • Handling and restraining animals

  • Delivering basic treatments

  • Controlling the movement of animals

  • Exercising animals

  • Grooming animals


You will also study Key Skills which include Maths and English.

Course Assessment
This is a portfolio based assessment qualification. Assessments will be made on practical ability and knowledge and understanding of set criteria. The course is Internally Verified and Externally Verified by City and Guilds. Completion of all mandatory units is required to receive the full qualification.

Course Costs
There are no course fees if you are under 19 years old on 31 August 2010. However, you may have to pay for textbooks, personal kits, uniforms, trips and personal stationery. You will be informed of these at your interview.

Activities such as trips and visits will be arranged, which are beneficial to this course and your learning. These activities are optional and additional fees will be charged to you. Details will be provided at the time of interview.

Course Progression
You may have the opportunity to progress onto NVQ Level 3 in Animal Care or BTEC Level 3 in Animal Management.

Course Career Prospects

  • This qualification will provide opportunities in careers including trainee veterinary nursing, kennel/cattery work, animal rehabilitation, zoo or visitor centre work, animal rescue, trainee groom and pet shop assistant.
