About this course

You will need three GCSEs at grades D-G and be working at Level

NVQ 1 Hospitality (Multi-Skilled)

What will I be learning?

A basic introduction to the Hospitality and Catering industry, food preparation and cooking methods, kitchen equipment, restaurant service, drink service, health and safety, food hygiene, teamwork and communication.

How will I learn?

You will develop your practical skills in taught sessions in our training kitchens and restaurant and theory lessons will provide the background knowledge you require. You are expected to work as part of a team in group sessions, whether in a practical workshop or classroom. Activities will include demonstrations, practical skills development, presentations, independent computer based learning, tutorials and visits. Your progress and achievements are continuously assessed throughout the programme which will include observation by tutors of your practical ability and demonstration of knowledge through a portfolio of evidence, practical and written tests.

What else might I want to know?

On successful completion of this course you will achieve a certificate in Level 1 Introduction to the Hospitality Industry. You will develop your communication skills and ability to work with others both of which will be recognised in your qualifications.

You will be working in our excellent training restaurant Horizons where you will be dealing with paying customers and learning all the skills necessary to prepare you for employment. You will have the opportunity to cook and serve on special events and possibly obtain part time employment through one of our many contacts.

Throughout the course you will have the full support and guidance of our highly skilled and professional teaching team all of whom have a wealth of experience ranging from the armed services, cruise ships, London restaurants such as the Savoy and Le Gavroche, restaurants in America, contract catering, five star hotels and the broader licensed hospitality industry.

What can I do afterwards?

On successful completion of this qualification, and with strong
tutor recommendation, you could be considered for the Diploma in Professional Cookery and Hospitality Level 1, or alternatively you may decide to take up employment and continue with your training by following an apprenticeship programme in your chosen vocational area. Full guidance and support will be given to steer you in the right direction.
