About this course

You have sufficient industrial experience and skills or have completed NVQ 1 Hairdressing. A salon work experience placement is required one day a week whilst studying this course.

Is this course right for me?

This course is suitable for you if you have sufficient industrial experience and skills or have completed NVQ 1 Hairdressing and wish to gain the skills as a junior stylist.

What will I be learning?

Hairdressing level 2 consists of nine units making up the full award covering client consultation; basic styling, cutting and colouring techniques. Perming is available as a basic optional technical unit. You will also cover reception duties, promoting the salon image as well as developing your existing shampooing & conditioning skills & knowledge. A salon placement is required to support your learning.

During your course, you will also be undertaking Key Skills qualification in Information Communication Technology which support your hairdressing qualification and meets the needs of industry, improving your future employment prospects.

How will I learn?

You will develop your communication and practical skills whilst working on peers and clients covering all aspects relating to the course and personal development.

You will be assessed by observation whilst carrying out practical tasks on clients in a realistic salon environment. You will also be required to complete assignments which will require additional independent learning & research. The qualification also includes oral questioning and written papers that involve sentenced answers.

There are opportunities to take part in trips, visits to various hair exhibitions to develop knowledge on emerging products, techniques & equipment within the hairdressing industry.

You will have the opportunity to become part of the College's Artistic Team and represent the College at local and national competitions which will further support you learning.

What else might I want to know?

You are required to purchase a uniform and suitable shoes that must be worn for all practical sessions. The wearing of jewellery during practical sessions must be kept to a minimum to maintain health & safety for yourself and others.

You will be required to purchase text books for the theory elements of the course and to support additional home study.

Due to the nature of the course, the purchase of a kit for practical sessions is also required for developing skills on peers and clients. You will be advised of the full costs and ordering process at your interview.

What can I do afterwards?

You may progress to an NVQ 3 in Hairdressing at South Devon College, employment as a junior stylist either in a salon, on cruise ships or to employment apprenticeships.
