Why should I study NVQ Food and Drink Service (Level 2)?
This course is designed for people who wish to gain a practical qualification in the Restaurant Service sector. It is run within the realistic working environment of a busy restaurant that is open to the public and college staff. You will learn the art of food and drink service practically as well as through theory related skills covering the food and drink service.
What will be studied on the course?
4 mandatory units:
- Maintain a safe, hygienic and secure working environment
- Contribute to effective teamwork
- Give customers a positive impression of yourself and your organisation
- Maintain food safety when storing, holding and serving food
Optional Units (these are a selection):
- Maintain and deal with payments
- Serve alcohol and soft drinks
- Receive, store and issue drink stores
- Prepare and clean areas for counter and table service

The course starts in September and lasts for 1 academic year.
What qualifications are needed to do the course?
You need a minimum of 4 GCSE's at grade D including English, and Maths or Science; or NVQ Level 1 with AoN and Communications at Level 1. How will the learner be assessed?
To gain the full qualification you must complete all eight units. You will be assessed by observation, questioning and products of work. The assessment takes place over a period of time and is based on the individual's competence. You will build up a portfolio of work to support your learning. You will be formally assessed during your work in the college restaurant. Underpinning knowledge is delivered in the theory lesson and is tested by a series of online testing.
How much will the course cost?
You will have access to a realistic working restaurant. Students will have to provide their own uniform at an approx cost of £55.00. You may have to contribute to the cost of any visits arranged throughout your course.
What progression routes are available?
- Students satisfactorily completing the course can readily progress to a Level 3 Hospitality Supervisory or an equivalent Level 2 in other aspects of Catering, e.g. Food Production, Customer Care
- Completion of this qualification will assist you to gain employment in your chosen area in the Hospitality, Food, Travel and Tourism, Health Care and Leisure industries
