A level 2 equestrian qualification or an equivalent practical ability which will be assessed on the taster day. No formal academic requirements. Riding ability will also be assessed during the taster day.

Full Time NVQ in Horse Care
Course Description:
The course is designed for people who want to train for a career with horses or a related subject, who have had some experience with horses.
The course is a level 2 equestrian qualification providing a preparation for employment in the horse industry, developing further equestrian skills. It will give you a good foundation for progression onto the BHS Stage 2 in Horse Knowledge and Care and level 3 programmes.
The course will develop your knowledge about the care of horse, their feeding and nutrition, trimming, fitting of tack, lungeing, travelling the horse and developing your personal skills. You will also develop your horse riding skills both on the flat, riding on the road and over fences.
You will learn in a group of up to 10 students and will have lots of practical work with demonstrations and lectures. To become good at what you do, practice is essential therefore, you will participate in daily yard skills session where you will be working on the yards, caring for the horses, mucking out, feeding grooming etc. This work will be supervised by the college staff and you will be given advice and help on how to improve your work skills.

Assessment and Progression:
Your practical work will be assessed regularly throughout the course and the results recorded in a portfolio. You will also complete some written questions. You will always know how well you are doing and what you need to do to improve your work by the feedback from your tutor.
Students usually progress on to the Level 3 Advanced Certificate in Horse Management, but may also progress directly to employment in the horse industry.
Note
Highly motivated, full time students could study the National Certificate in Horse Care and the NVQ in Horse Care Level 2 during their years programme, giving timetabled hours of 21.5 hours per week, plus supervised daily work skills practice and study time at home.
Key Skills Communications and Application of Number are embedded into this programe which maximises employability.
Duration:
Full-time students (21.5 hours per week/3 days per week) will complete within 21 weeks (January - June).
Part-time students (12.5 hours per week/2 days) will complete within one academic year (September - June).
