Course Overview This two year course has a strong practical element and students will take part in regular performances and productions. The course is multi-disciplined with all students studying acting, dance and stage design. Performing Arts courses benefit from a fully equipped Performing Arts centre, The Forum, which has facilities for acting and dance and you will also have the chance to perform in local professional venues such as the Corn Exchange. As part of the course you will have the opportunity to take part in both local and international tours. Qualification gained: BTEC National Diploma in Performing Arts (Performance)

Course Content: The course includes: Acting and Voice Skills, Choreography, Contemporary and Classical Theatre, Contemporary Dance, Devising and Improvising Drama, Jazz Dance, The historical and sociological contexts behind performing arts in Britain and other cultures, Performing Arts Business, Theatre for Children and Theatre in Education. In addition to these areas of performance you will study the use of masks, puppetry, costume and set design. The course is modular and allows different completion points. You can choose to study as little as six units and gain the equivalent of one GCE A level or as many as 24 units and gain the equivalent of four GCE A levels.

Work Experience: There is no need to be working in a related field in order to study this course. Work placement will form a part of the course through your involvement in the College production company which will operate in a real working environment.

Course Assessment: Performing Arts courses operate a project based approach to assessment. Typically you will be set a performance based project and your tutors will link their assignments to the project. In usual circumstances you will have six projects each year. In addition you will need to keep a log book of work that you have undertaken for each project. Your coursework, videos of rehearsals and performances and log books will be internally marked and then moderated by an external examiner during the course. There are no external examinations but instead you will produce a portfolio of work which is assessed against the grading criteria for the 18 units. Each of the units will be graded at Pass, Merit or Distinction level. At the end of the course all of the unit grades count towards a triple grade for the qualification.

Progression: Most students will go on to higher study in acting, dance or design. This course will prepare you for both university and performing arts/drama school study. To look at the types of courses that you can progress on to look at
