About this course

Normally students 16-19 years of age will require a minimum of 5 GCSEs at grades A*-C and be able to show evidence of an enthusiasm for at least one of the performing arts or stage management or administration. Entry for mature units without formal qualifications is at the discretion of the Faculty.

The Course teaches: Skills for Performance; Planning an Event; Performing to a Commission; Employment opportunities in the Performing Arts ; Advanced Performance or Production Practice; and Production Delivery.

Course Features

A practically-based qualification in Performing Arts.

Students may specialize in one or more performing arts' forms e.g. Music, Dance, Drama, Stage Management and Administration.

The course offers a vocational perspective on the Performing Arts' industries.

The course is designed to provide a progression route to Higher Education and further training for employment.

Although a stand-alone qualification, this course is an excellent inter-disciplinary course with strong vocational links

Key Skills are integral to the course and the main opportunities to provide evidence for the separate Key Skills' qualifications are mapped throughout the course.

The term "vocational" is used to characterize learning approaches and activities that are work-related i.e. reflecting the current working practices, constraints and preoccupations of professionals in the performing arts' industry.

Both the AS and A Level courses prepare candidates for further study or training in Performing Arts-related occupations. Although the course is taught through the medium of English, there are opportunities for students to bring in their own Welsh dimension.

Students have opportunities to develop appropriate materials as evidence, such as portfolios,videos, diaries, showreels, photos, performances or audition pieces etc., which support progression.

There are no formal written examinations.
Career Prospects and Progression

AS and A Levels provide an excellent basis for progression to higher level qualifications such as Degrees and Higher National Diplomas. The course qualifies for UCAS points for Higher Education entrance and students can also go on to relevant employment opportunities, whether as practitioners, administrators or production support.

AS: Unit 1: Exploring Skills for Performance. Unit 2: Planning for an Event. Unit 3: Performing to a Commission. A2: Unit 4: Employment Opportunities in the Performing Arts. Unit 5: Advanced Performance Practice. or Unit 6: Advanced Production Practice. Unit 7: Final Production Delivery.

Method of Assessment

AS: Two portfolios and a performance assessment. A2: Two portfolios and a production assessment. All work is assessed by the teacher and moderated by a visiting moderator.
