About this course

You will need 4 GCSEs at grade C or above including Maths and English (if not achieved this can be completed within the course duration), or successful completion of a Level 2 course in a related subject graded at merit or above with key skills to Level 2. You will also need to pass an audition.

Is the course for me?
This two year course is for students wanting to develop skills in dance. You can use this as a stepping stone to university or dance schools and historically a high percentage of students progress to Higher Education (95% in both 2008 & 2009) The course is designed to develop the technical skills of dance plus the creative approaches to choreography and practical working methods. The main emphasis is placed upon Contemporary Dance with classes in Urban, Jazz, Ballet and other dance styles. You do not necessarily need prior dance training to enrol, but you need to have passion for dance and we strongly advise that you participate in some dance classes before enrolling, to develop knowledge and technique.

What will I learn?
This course is aimed at students who are interested in developing a variety of skills related to the performing arts industry. The course is predominantly practical with some written assignments. The course involves a combination of practical and theory sessions culminating in shows and performances in dance and performance. We have a new state of art HUB 49 theatre with 150 seats a Dance Studio, Drama studio all with sprung dance floors. We intermix with the performing arts, music and vocal artist students also fashion/ costume design and set design. Industry links with university placements and theatres. There will be a selection of enrichment activities including: tap, ballet, street dance company and college radio station (free of charge), and you will be invited to theatre trips and residential throughout the year. Units covered in Year one & Year two include: - Urban Dance - Jazz Dance - Contemporary Dance Technique - Musical Theatre (Christmas Show) - Dance Improvisation - Contact Improvisation - Choreography - Physical Theatre - Historical Context - The Healthy Performer - Performing Arts Business - End of year show.

How will I be assessed?
Assessment is continuous through portfolio, written assignments, workshops and practical performances.

What can I do after the course?
You can progress to a Higher Education Degree programme at Stage School, or find employment in Theatre companies, TV , Dance groups or Teaching programmes.
