Photography AS/A2
This course will appeal to students who are interested in developing their creative skills in photography. You will learn both digital and traditional techniques including how to develop your own film, create prints from your own negatives and use Photoshop to manipulate digital images. You will also look at the work of other photographers and learn how to analyse and evaluate images using specialist terms and vocabulary.

You will have access to a specialist dark room, cameras and digital facilities.

There will be the opportunity to visit galleries and museums during the course.

What will I study?
Throughout the course you will develop camera, darkroom and digital skills, build up a substantial portfolio of your own photography and study the work of established artists and photographers.

AS: The first year introduces you to creative photography using both traditional and digital techniques. You will build a broad and exciting portfolio of work on a variety of scales and learn to research and develop your ideas.

A2: In the second year you will build on the skills and understanding developed at AS level and work more independently on projects. You will have the chance to explore digital imaging, colour and studio work in more detail.

How will I be assessed?
AS: 1 coursework project and an externally assessed timed practical exam at the end of year one.

A2: 1 coursework project and an externally assessed timed practical exam at the end of year two and a written personal study .

What can I do next?
At the end of the course you will have a full and interesting portfolio of photographic work. Photography is particularly useful if you want to go on to further study in Art and Design, Media, Photography and Digital Imaging, as well as being a valuable practical skill. You may wish to use your portfolio to support applications for a Foundation Diploma in Art and Design or another specialist course.
