Photography

What is this course about?
  • The course involves learning techniques associated with black and white film based photography, and the digital manipulation of coloured images.
  • The AS units are mainly practical, at A2 you will produce a written personal study in additional to developing your practical skills further.


What topics will I study?

At AS:
  • First unit, coursework involves developing a visual language and responding to a set theme. Skills learnt include the taking, processing and printing of black and white photographs, and experimental darkroom and Photoshop techniques. Research into the work of inspirational photographers will require you to develop creative language skills and understand the ideas informing photographic works.
  • Second unit requires a response to an exam board set theme. This will be planned during lessons. The outcome will be produced during an 8 hour timed exam.


At A2
  • Third unit , coursework requiring you to set a personal brief and develop black and white, and colour photographic outcomes. You will also write a personal study, by researching an area of photography or the work and ideas of inspiring photographers.
  • Fourth unit requires a response to an exam board set theme. This will be planned during lessons. The outcome will be produced during a 12 hour timed exam.


How will my work be assessed?
  • Your work will be assessed by your teacher throughout the year and written and verbal feedback given.
  • At the end of the year all units are internally marked and externally moderated.
  • Marking is done with reference to 4 set assessment objectives.

What skills do I need to succeed?
  • You will need to develop good practical skills in taking and printing photographs, and be able to make informed visual judgements.
  • You will need to develop the ability to be enquiring and analytical when looking at the work of other photographers and make connections to your own work.
  • You must have the enthusiasm to go out on location and take photographs.


What knowledge do I need to succeed?
  • The course will introduce you to photographic techniques assuming that you have no previous experience or knowledge. This will allow you to start photography as a new subject, or build on an existing interest.
  • A general interest in various areas of photography and visual ideas is an advantage.


Do I need to own a camera?
Yes you will need a digital camera.

What are the lessons like?
  • A range of teaching and learning styles is used during the course. Group briefings, slide shows, practical demonstrations, research tasks, discussions, group and individual critiques.
  • For much of the course you are working on individual, practical, ILT or research based tasks.
  • 1:1 support is available to all students.

  • Be creative and inventive with techniques and processes.
  • Manage time efficiently to complete all practical and research tasks.
  • Learn by exploring the work of other photographers.
  • Keep your eyes open for inspiring places and subjects to photograph.

What do people do with A level Photography
  • Many students go on to an Art Foundation course. This is a general diagnostic year that allows students to try all Art and Design specialisms before going on to an HE course. Some universities will accept students onto a Photography degree with A levels and a portfolio.
  • Career opportunities exist in many areas of photography, advertising, interior design, teaching, animation, web design, CAD and publishing. Students can go on to work for companies or as freelance photographers.

Photography A level can also accompany other subjects and contribute a qualification to unrelated HE applications and career paths.

Will there be any significant costs related to this subject apart from normal stationery?
Materials pack £50, mount board £10, printing paper £25, film £10, a camera £150 and day trip to London (optional) £15.
