Course Content:
Year one
Students gain practical experience in both piano tuning and piano repairs. The course centres on four main elements: piano tuning, chipping up, repairs to the mechanism including replacing felts, and case repair (French polishing). Other aspects include materials and their application, the history and development of the piano, woodworking for instrument makers and Health and Safety.
Year two and three
This covers all aspects of fine tuning on both upright and grand pianos. It also includes everything from minor maintenance tasks typically performed on customers' pianos, to full workshop restoration and refurbishment. The programme is workshop based and is very 'hands on'. Following initial demonstration and guidance, teaching and learning become increasingly self-directed as concepts and techniques are practised. Main elements include: upright and grand piano fine tuning, restringing, action (hammer mechanism) overhaul, setting up and regulating (making the piano 'work properly'), case restoration and polishing.
