Course aims:
Would you like to gain the skills and training required to enter the world of the Plumbing industry? Would you like a career that can be very financially rewarding? The Plumbing industry continues to grow and is very competitive our courses have been designed to give you the skills and confidence to get out there working for yourself, winning jobs and contracts.
This is a one year full time course for students wishing to study for the Technical Certificate in plumbing. If you are interested in a career in plumbing industry then this is the starting course for you.
The course requires that you attend 3-4 days per week at the college alongside an element of self study at home. Students should have obtained some form of industry related employment after the conclusion of the course.
Once employed, this will enable you to obtain the Level 2 Plumbing NVQ (6089) and subsequently move on to a level 3 course.

Course content:
This course is designed to meet industry standards and provides a good grounding for you to go out into the workplace and subsequently on to a higher level. It covers all the required foundation skills, including:

  • Health and safety,
  • Cold water systems,
  • Domestic hot water,
  • Sanitation systems,
  • Central heating,
  • Electrical
  • Environmental awareness
  • Supply



Facilities for students:
Students will be based at our Preston Road site where we have extensive workshop facilities. Student plumbers can be put forward for College and external award. Also, throughout the year we offer informal internal tournaments and contests. Learners will be expected to participate in sporting activities on Wednesday afternoons through the college.

Tutors:
The Plumbing department is staffed by an enthusiastic and experienced team who have various links with local employers.
Our lecturing staff has 140 years plumbing experience between them and are always on hand to support you through your studies. They include, Trevor Alford, John Kempshall, Graham Irving and Adam Broadbent.

Assessment: Achievement is by ongoing formal assessment, consisting of 63 practical, 11 theory exams and a final on-line GOLA multiple choice exam.

Progression and links:
After you have completed the Level 2 Technical Certificate (6129) you should next be seeking employment within the Plumbing industry with a view to enable you undertake the NVQ 6089.
You could then progress onto the Level 3 Technical Certificate, which will give you the confidence and skills to work on larger jobs or become self-employed.
The Plumbing industry is constantly evolving and you will need to keep your qualifications maintained and up-to-date. City College is hoping to offer a series of industry certificated qualifications for employed plumbers.
