Course aims:
Would you like to gain the skills and training required to enter the world of the Plumbing industry? Would you like a career that can be very financially rewarding? The Plumbing industry continues to grow and is very competitive our courses have been designed to give you the skills and confidence to get out there working for yourself, winning jobs and contracts.
If you are interested in career in the plumbing industry then this is the entry course for you. The course requires 4 days a week in which you must attend the college, along with regular homework and an element of self study at home.
Course content:
This course covers 7 theory subjects, each will have an internally set exam:
- Introduction to employment
- Health & Safety
- Customer Relations
- Job seeking skills
- Environmental awareness
- Making good
- Plumbing theory
There will also be 8 practical assessments to include:
- Installing / exchanging radiators
- Installation of pipework
- Working with copper fittings
- Working with copper pipework
- Working with iron pipework
- Working with plastic pipework
- Hot and cold water systems
- Basic electrical tasks
Facilities for students:
Students will be based at our Preston Road site where we have extensive workshop facilities.
Student plumbers can be put forward for College and external awards throughout the year.
You will be expected to participate in sporting or other enrichment activities on Wednesday afternoons through the college.
Tutors:
The plumbing department is staffed by an enthusiastic and experienced team who have excellent links with local employers. Our lecturing staff has 140 years plumbing experience between them and are always on hand to support you through your studies. They include, Trevor Alford, John Kempshall, Graham Irving and Adam Broadbent.
Assessment: Ongoing paper base knowledge and practical assessments.

Interview preparation:
We suggest you prepare for this by undertaking some general maths revision covering calculating volume and area, material quantities, percentages, taking measurements, basic maths including long division and multiplication, interpreting information on charts and servicing instructions.

Progression and links:
This foundation plumbing course will equip you for consideration to the Level 2 Technical Certificate 6129 together with employment in the industry.
From there you can progress to the NVQ2 6089 and then on to Level 3 (Technical Certificate and NVQ3) or Level 2 Gas Installation and Maintenance and lastly up to Gas ACS accreditation (Gas Safe Register previously known as CORGI).
Potentially you can enter the workplace from the end of this course in form of an apprenticeship program.
