Plumbing Foundation for Adults (over the age of 19)

Course Details

This course is for learners who are either unemployed or employed outside the plumbing industry but can attend from 9.00am to 5.00pm on weekdays for two days per week, who desire to become a plumber and need to improve their chance of employment in the industry by obtaining skills and knowledge in plumbing and a recognised qualification. Attendance: 13 hours per week, usually 6/7 hours per day, 2 days per week. You will need to provide protective work clothes, footwear and basic study materials. All other equipment and materials are supplied by the College. Textbooks are available in the College library and there may be time outside the 13 hours course time when you need to use the College's library facility so that assignments can be completed on time. The aim of the course is to provide knowledge and skill in plumbing systems and installation so that the candidate can successfully obtain the 6129 Plumbing Level 2 Technical Certificate. Employed applicants must ensure they are aware of the course fees, which may depend upon individual circumstances, before making an application. There will be a course enrolment fee, a City and Guilds registration fee and a resources fee. The enrolment and registration fees are dependent on individual circumstances, of which fee and relevant waivers are obtainable from Learner Support Services. The resource fee is non negotiable. Basic theory and practical skill in domestic plumbing, on systems of cold, hot and heating water. Sanitation and drainage. weathering buildings against the elements. In practical lessons you will be measuring, bending and jointing different pipe materials accurately. Installing simple pipe work in various materials, fit a bathroom, fit a cylinder cupboard, and flash' a full-scale chimney and carry out routing maintenance of plumbing systems. Also safe practice of all practical work in the workshop and building site. Assessment City and Guilds assessment and tests are designed and specified. There are practical assessments, assessed by approved College staff, written assignments carried out under exam conditions and one computer style end exam. The candidate must pass all assessments and test to obtain the certificate.

2. Must be available for the two timetabled days of the course for the full duration of the course.
3. Pass the College's entry test (contact the College Admissions service to arrange the test, preferably before Easter of the year you want to start in the September).
4. Learners will attend an interview with the course tutor, where you will have the opportunity to ask questions and learn more about the course and its requirements. The course conditions will be explained in detail. You need to be ready to accept these conditions that relate to safety, attendance and behaviour.
An initial assessment may be carried out prior to an offer of a place.
Please note that this is a popular course with limited places, selection for the course takes place from May each year and applicants with the best qualifications and the highest entry test scores are offered places. Selection for interview is determined by the College test score and the availability of places.

Course length:
This is a one-year course, starting in September and finishing in July of the following year. You are expected to attend for 35 weeks, with normal bank holiday breaks, two weeks at Christmas and Easter, with half-term holidays. You will be given a College diary on enrolment that includes all College holidays. However, please check with course tutors before booking holidays during the normal attendance weeks.

Additional info:
Safety footwear must be worn in all workshops. We do not allow the use of safety trainers.

Progression:
Learners need to find employment in the plumbing industry before they apply for the NVQ level 2 plumbing qualification. This qualification can only be obtained by gathering evidence in the workplace and cannot be delivered or assessed in the College.
It is important to realise that access to the 6129 level 3 certificate at Hull College can only be made if the applicant has already obtained a full NVQ level 2 in plumbing.
