Course programme

Introduction

The course is of three years duration and is the recommended follow on option to the Academy’s part-time MT course before seeking representation and employment. Students gain a Higher National Diploma in Musical Theatre approved by the Scottish Qualifications Authority. Crucially, in the 3rd year of the Course, students present a Showcase to an invited audience of casting directors and agents in a leading West End London Theatre.

Class hours and timetable

Students attend the Academy of a full time basis commencing their training in late August with year completion in late June. All students receive a comprehensive training featuring body conditioning, Ballet, tap, jazz, contemporary, acting, ensemble voice, solo voice, performance class, physical theatre, music theory, sight singing and musical theatre repertoire studies. Students of the full-time MT Course receive a weekly private singing lesson– focussing on technique and repertoire development.

In addition to the weekly timetable, students receive frequent Masterclasses by visiting professionals and guest tutors from the industry.

Assessment

Students are continually assessed within their class, however formal assessments are also set by the various departments at points throughout the year. Students receive a tutorial each term where they will have the opportunity to discuss progress with staff. Additionally, students are required to keep a detailed diary of their coursework as further evidence of coursework being completed and outcomes being achieved.

Students must gain satisfactory results in all Assessed areas in order to proceed to the next stage of the Course. Please note that students who do not maintain required attendance, time and commitment levels may have their place terminated irrespective of assessment results.

Performance

An important part of the provision here at GAMTA is performance experience. Students of the full-time Musical Theatre Course perform in a wide variety of genres, providing as broad an experience of performance as possible. These include small scale studio showcases, a fully commercial panto and a fully staged Production Showcase. In addition to these, students study and present one fully produced musical theatre piece during each year of their course. Students also have a weekly Performance Class and Performance Projects throughout their training.
