Public Services First Diploma
The BTEC First Diploma in Public Services is designed to equip learners with the knowledge, understanding and skills required for employment within a wide area of public service occupations such as: Armed Forces, Police, Prison Service, Paramedics, Fire Fighters and Local Government Administration. It also acts as direct progression to BTEC National Diplomas, in particular the National Diploma in Public Services.

Course Content:
The course will cover the following subjects:

  • Public service work
  • & skills

  • The individual
  • & society

  • Public service fitness
  • Optional subjects studied include:

    • Sport
    • & Recreation
    • Outdoor activities
    • Law
    • & the individual
    • Information technology

    There is also the opportunity to study the key skills in communication, information technology and application of number, as well as GCSEs in Maths and English and first aid training.

    Awarding body:
    Edexcel.
    Work Experience / Practical Experience:
    You will take part in fieldwork and have opportunities for work experience.

    Attendance Requirements:
    Full-time. Details regarding expected course timetable and attendance will be given at interview, if available.

    Entry Requirements:
    Applicants should hold one of the following:

    • At least four GCSEs including two at grade C or above

    Entry Process:
    All applicants will be invited to an interview with the tutor, allowing you to find out more and check that the course is the best option for you. Interviews normally take place between January and September of the year in which the course starts.

    Assessment:
    Continuous assessment through coursework involving assignments and research. All work is verified externally.

    Progression Routes:
    Progression to the BTEC National Diploma, GNVQ Advanced and other equivalent Level 3 courses.

    Career Options:
    Employment in the armed forces, private security services and emergency and community service organisations as well as the Police, Fire, Ambulance and Prison services and HM Customs & Excise.
