About this course

Is the course for me?
This course aims to help develop the skills and knowledge required to gain employment in the uniformed public services such as the forces, fire and police services or to progress into higher education . This qualification requires motivation and a good academic level of achievement as it gives learners the opportunity to progress into higher education and throughout the course learners develop a range of skills, techniques, personal attributes and attitudes essential for successful performance in public services careers.

What will I learn?
The course is made up of 18 units studied over two years, after 15 months students will achieve a certificate, then progress onto the Diploma. The units are a range of practical and theoretical subjects. Residential outdoor visits are likely to be combined into this programme to compliment studies and to enable pursuit and physical outdoor skills. The units studied include Government policies and public services, team leadership, team development, understanding discipline, diversity in the public services and crime and its effects. The Public Service team also has strong links with external agencies such as the army and the navy. External speakers will also come in to College to share their knowledge and expertise.

How will I be assessed?
You should already possess a good level of writing skills and the course is assessed by assignments including reports, essays, booklets and presentations. Practical activities are also assessed, with opportunities to attend residential placements that are assessed. Students should be able to demonstrate research skills and be self-motivated learners.

What can I do after the course?
You can progress onto a range of jobs within the public services sector. Or you can progress onto Higher Education courses such as Degrees or Foundation Degrees.
