Course Description
The aim of the course is to offer a more comprehensive scriptwriting degree provision than is currently available anywhere else in the North of England.
The intention of the degree is to introduce students to the study and practice of the craft and art of scriptwriting over a wide variety of genres and forms.
At Level 4 students will follow a course of study that includes:
- Adaptations
- Introduction to Scriptwriting
- Writing for Radio
- Writing for the Theatre
At Level 5 students will follow a course of study that includes:
- Television Genres 1: Soaps
- Television Genres 2: Cop Shows
- Television Genres 3: Sitcoms
- Television Genres 4: Factual Drama
At Level 6 students will follow a course of study that includes:
- Calling Card Script
- Dissertation/Project
- Original Series/Serial Bible
Assessment
Students are assessed primarily by written playscripts but also by research journals, essays and learning diaries.

We also welcome applications from people who do not meet the standard entry criteria, but we would expect to see evidence of continuing academic and/or professional development.
Progression Routes
The course is appropriate for students who wish to work in television and film, enabling them to enter the industry as readers, script editors or scriptwriters.
The evolving nature of the film and TV industries means that employers are seeking imaginative writers and creative people who can demonstrate transferable and flexible skills.
The course is also suitable for students who wish to work in the formal arts community, where there will be opportunities to work as Literary Officers, in arts associations, or in local government.
Scriptwriting is a developing academic discipline which will create opportunities to work in educational institutions at all levels.
Fees
All fees are per academic year and are the standard charges which may be subject to changes without notice. Standard fees apply to students who have been resident in the UK/EU for at least 3 years. Please note some courses may have additional costs for materials, exams and registration fees in addition to standard course fees.
